TOPIC: Stunning

Stunning 1 year, 1 month ago #1924

Went to the Oxford gig yesterday with a friend and we were absolutely blown away. Have been to see the band in it's various incarnations for the last 3 years, and we both agreed this was the most enjoyable show yet.

I wasn't sure about the set list beforehand, but really enjoyed it on the night, and everything was played to perfection. ("Have a Cigar" is still a rubbish track, but it was exceptionally well played rubbish

The sound was spot on, everyone seemed to be having fun, and I didn't want it to end.

One thing I would say is that in smaller venues like Oxford, you really need to turn the smoke machines down a bit. Made the lights look amazing, but a lot of the wonderful screen images were lost in the mist rather. At one point in Echoes I was right in the smoke, and we were sat in the fifth row!

Also, it might be better to light Damien from above in the Comfortably Numb solo rather than behind, as the audience can't see anything if you shine two very bright spotlights right in their faces!

Those are my only criticisms of what was in every other way an absolutely fantastic show.
Bravo!

Wow you really are a bit of a whinge - Echoes and CN are as precise in their showmanship as possible.

Pink Floyd's and therefore Brit Floyds ethos has always been - dont look at us look at the pretty lights while we do our thing. The idea is to get carried away with the music and let it enter your soul so that the last thing you want to do is wonder what the band are actually doing.

Hands up anyone who has been to a Floyd show and actually paid attention to the big circle screen - apart from the Pulse DVD. The screen is there to add flavour and is not the recipe.

'Have a Cigar' is not a rubbish track at all - get clued up on Floyd and you will find what they are singing about.

Personally i would like to see the Brit lads and lasses play more earlier stuff - but i know and understand that if they did they would alienate a lot of the middle of the road crowd and those people are their bread and butter so they do their best to please all generations. Hmmmm i think you have to be a certain age to understand what i mean - lol

Sorry for the rant but Brit Floyd and crew are the best you and us are the best we will ever witness in our life time.

Peace

1. I wasn't whingeing - I had a great time, which I clearly stated. (Have just bought tickets to another show next month, I enjoyed it so much). Some people like constructive criticism though, so I was just giving my feedback. This is a discussion forum right?

2. Track preferences are obviously personal. I understand "Have a Cigar", I just think the tune and tone of voice for the vocals is abysmal. No slight on BritFLoyd here - they nailed it, such as it is. Sometimes tracks which I don't particualrly like the studio versions of turn out to be much more enjoyable live (Welcome to the Machine, Pigs, See Emily Play, anything from The Final Cut), but no such joy for me on this one. If you like the song I imagine you would love Brit Floyd's rendition though.

I can imagine it's very hard for the band to work out what to play to suit everyone in the audience. As you say, some of the early stuff is a bit of an acquired taste. At least they have a nice range of tracks to choose from, so can put in different things to suit different people. (I personally would love to hear more tracks from Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell.)

3. "dont look at us look at the pretty lights while we do our thing." The screens with the animations are part of the "pretty lights" in my opinion, and I happen to like being able to see what's on them. Smoke is fine, and it's right for there to be lots of it during the sound-effects bit in the middle of Echoes, but in general it just needed turning down a notch! (I've seen Brit Floyd three times already in the last couple of years, and this is the first time there has been any problem. I'm not the only one to comment on the overabundance of smoke this tour either.)

Peace, as you say.

Having seen them last night in Cardiif, I have to agree with the smoke comment. Definitely too much.
