TOPIC: Sheffield City Hall - May 24th 2012

Sheffield City Hall - May 24th 2012 12 months ago #1969

My third 'A foot in the Door' gig. The venue appears nice to look at, and on such a fantastic summers evening, with the sun blazing down... I expected a fantastic night out.

A good friend got the ticket for me, and was extremely pleased with dead centre, five rows back.

I was a bit sceptical about the dubious report on the quality of the mix, the PA, the smoke, the graphics, the spotlights and the quality of the musicianship from the Leicester gig. I had already spoken to a few folk that had attended the same gig, and reported a conflicting opinion.

I was in the gods at this same gig last year at Sheffield, and was not impressed with the sound then, but speaking to various band members that have played the venue, they say that this particular hall is not an easy gig for the desk.

Well. that's the preamble... now the gig.

It started, as expected, on time.
The sound, from where I sat was excellent.
The smoke, on a couple of tracks (for a minute at most) billowed into the front row of seats on one side (what can you expect... it was being pumped from the back of the stage at floor level) Don't buy a front row seat !
The spots from the lighting ring, were doing their job, and pointed thoughout the event, around the venue. Maybe a few glanced across you occasionally. Nothing to wince about.
The projections were bright enough, and shon through the ring lights.

Musicianship was good.
Ian performed the best I think, as I have heard him sing.
Rick was on Keys, and it looked like he was having a ball.
The girls had a smile on their faces for a good part of the night. They certainly looked happy.
Bobby on Echoes was on fire.
Damian was still seated due to his accident (but on the mend). His Lapsteal and Vocoder work was spot on.
Carl on the Bass boomed a good tune, along with the rest of the tools in the orchestra.
Arran on the Intro to Time was beaming with smiles too (there must have been an in-joke somewhere).

I took a new camera with me. First time out of the box, but the HD video footage I took was pretty good. I will put links on here as they begin to reside on You Tube.
They will not be full tracks, just tasters for potential fans, and overall effects of the event. (I wanted to watch though my eyes, and not glass).

Highlight? 'Fletcher Memorial' - Damn, that was good... and Echoes.

Disapointments? The audience. Looking around the seats, everyone seamed to know the tracks, they seamed to enjoy the tracks..... but were buggered if they were going to show it. Often, applause was on a time delay. It appeared that they were not going to clap first, but were happy to, if someone else started it off.

Has the band lowered their game ? I dont think so. I took three Pink floyd fans with me, two of which attended the Derby APFS in March. All four of us left this gig, impressed, converted, hot, hoarse and tired.

Another report on the gig.

A friend at work had some tickets and asked if I wanted to go... SO glad i did. The group of 4 of us managed to meet Rick before the show, really nice guy.

The show lived up to the Floyd experience I was hoping for, lights, sound and feeling from the band was worth being there for. There have been too many bands in the past I have seen, played and just sat there making noise, not in this case though. Rick was well away on the keyboards and Bobby was in was in full swing. Then there was Ola... DAMN what a voice, all 4 of the ladies stomped out a great tune but hells bells.

I will be trying to get to see these guys and gals again.

Just a side note about the audience. I too was looking round watching people, they are at a Brit Floyd gig being British 'We will clap when the song is done, any more and that would be out of line' type thing. I think next time they should just enjoy and forget about British and just let go.

Best tracks for me was Comfortably Numb and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Hard to split the two.

Thanks for a good night.

How bizzar is that Chris (Scotch) ?

You have chosen the forum name of 'Scotch', and praise the band and the evening itself. I know why you have picked that name though I like a tipple myself.

The odd thing is, that I often have opinions and an exchange of banter with a guy called 'Skotch' on this same forum. That person doesnt always agree with the rest of the forum members (but they are entitled to their opinion of course - and no animosity is meant I feel).

I am glad that you enjoyed the gig, and hope that you take some of your other collegues with you to the next one, and spread the word a little.

Did the two videos that I posted represent the two band members that you mention ? I will upload the rsst when I get some more time.

How ya guess?

Those 2 vids are a good representation of what I was on about.

I am just looking at Bobby's web site and the Frethub youtube section. Got some good stuff to pick up.

Now where did I put that bottle of Jack?

Cheers
